Scouting's Journey to Excellence & GOOD TURN FOR AMERICA

"Scouting's Journey to Excellence" is the BSA's new council performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of our units, districts, and councils. It is replacing the Centennial Quality Awards Program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA.  To obtain your access number please contact Alahna Bell or Dan Lindh at 412-471-2927. Area 1 Boy Scout Spring Camporee

Welcome to the 2012 Area 1 Spring Camporee! This year’s camporee theme will be “Hobbys”. Events will include demonstrations and hands on Model RC Planes, Helicopters, Cars, Ham Radio, Geocaching, dutch oven cook off and the first ever Blast Car Rally. Friends of Scouting 2012

Area 1 is currently in need of a few good Scouters to aid in the presentation of the 2012 Friends of Scouting materials to units in all three districts.  If you feel that you can help please contact Alahna Bell at 412-325-7963  or  albell@bsamail.org.  Thanks in Advance! Also if you have not secured your units presentation date expect a phone call from the Area 1 FOS team or if you have a date in mind please contact Alahna Bell.

Scouting for Food – Materials and supplies will be available at the March Roundtable

 The Scouting Division will distribute Scouting for Food bags to neighborhoods throughout the Laurel Highlands Council during April 16-21. The Scouting units will return to collect canned food contributions during April 23-28 or other pre-arranged times. The Scout units will also be collecting contributions at local food stores and other local collection sites during the drive. Contributions to the Scouting for Food campaign will be distributed to the food banks, pantries, and kitchens in communities of southwestern Pennsylvania where the collections are made to help these providers meet the needs of our hungry neighbors.  For more information please contact Amanda Smith or your district coordinator listed below.  Register for Scouting for Food.

Area 1 Chapter Order of the Arrow

Allohak Menewi will continue to have chapters but they will be organized based on the council service areas versus districts.  Jim Gallagher will be serving as the Area 1 Adviser. The chapters will be electing officers to include a Chapter Chief, Vice Chief and Secretary.  Contact the adviser for your chapter if you are interested in one of these chapter positions or watch for an announcement of when elections will be held for your chapter.  The chapters of Allohak Menewi are expected to be very active.  Get involved and have some fun. Summer Camp Promotions

Summer Camp, It will be here before you know it!! Area 1 is currently seeking volunteers to help present materials for the upcoming summer camp season.  If you have been to summer camp here in Laurel Highlands Council and you would love to talk about your experience please contact Dan Lindh at 724-699-3619. Area 1 is currently looking for a qualified volunteer to be responsible for the formatting and updating of the district website(s).  The person should be familiar with web design, using content editors and BSA web policies. If you are interested please contact Dan Lindh at 412-325-7964.

Area 1 Training Events

Boy Scout Leader Indoor Training will be held on March 24, 2012 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church in West Mifflin, Boy Scout Leader Outdoor Training will be held in conjunction with Area 3 on April 20-22 2012 at Camp Annawanna. Register for Boy Scout Leader Training

Roundtable?

What is Roundtable? Roundtable is a form of supplemental training held monthly on a district basis. Roundtable provides ALL Scout Leaders an opportunity to share ideas and activities with leaders from other units. It is a source of continuing information. Leaders and parents can find out about the latest news, what is happening in the Scouting community as well as the opportunities available for you and your youth in the area. Anyone can attend! So, what are you waiting for? Join us for an evening of fellowship and fun, meet other Scout parents and leaders, get exciting ideas to make your meetings fun, and learn about the wonderful opportunity you are giving your son through Scouting.
